Description including Unit Aims
The unit will explore the subject of leadership in an integrated and reflective manner. Students will be encouraged to critically engage with current thinking and writing on leadership and management and to consider the interface between ‘secular’ models of leadership and Biblical and theological approaches. The personal development, internal character and spirituality of the leader will also be examined, in order that students might be better equipped both to exercise leadership in community themselves and to help others who hold leadership positions.
This unit aims to
- enable students to apply appropriate tools from various areas of theological study in order to inform and comment on the subject of leadership in the church and the workplace;
- facilitate students in integrating biblical, theological, pastoral, ethical and liturgical approaches to leadership with their prior experience;
- enable students to integrate a range of Christian resources on leadership with a view to formulating their own coherent personal response and practice;
- enable students to think laterally about issues concerning leadership and to how they might apply them in future life and ministry.
Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of the unit students should:
- have developed skills in lateral thinking and making critical connections between different elements of their training and studies and between their past, present and future life and learning experiences;
- have become adept at integrating theory with practice and drawing appropriately upon material taught under other biblical, doctrinal, historical, ecclesiological, pastoral, discipleship, and mission units to inform their thinking about leadership;
- be able to relate Christian theology discerningly and imaginatively to the world of work and leadership;
- be able to identify and articulate influential ideas about leadership and management and critically evaluate them from a theological perspective;
- be able to assess and articulate the relevance of biblical material on the subject of leadership and to relate it to practice;
- be able to evaluate secular models of leadership so as to assess their appropriateness for leadership of the church and other Christian organizations.
Teaching Information
The unit will be taught through seminars, interactive activities, presentations and group work.
Assessment Information
Formative assessment will be through the students' participation in the group work and other activities, with tutor feedback to the whole class. In addition, students will write a daily learning journal during the unit, for which written feedback will be given.
Summative assessment will be through a written task of 3,000 words.
