Description including Unit Aims

This unit will provide students with the opportunity to study a foreign language in the context of their Erasmus visit to the University of Bristol. Students who choose this unit option will be placed in an existing class in the School of Modern Languages, appropriate to their language level at point of entry (benchmarked against the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages – CEFR). It is expected that this will be in French, German, Spanish or Italian.

It is expected that students will have some prior learning of the language concerned, typically an A level or equivalent and some time studying that language at their home university.

The unit will include:

• General communication skills
• Academic listening and note-taking skills
• Academic and sub-technical language
• Academic reading and writing skills
• Oral presentation skills
• Cultural and social aspects of the language
• E-learning opportunities

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate their oral and written communication skills in the target language with a reasonable degree of accuracy and fluency.
2. Develop a knowledge and awareness of the general social and cultural background of the target language.
3. Comprehend and analyse source materials in the target language at the relevant level.
4. Select and synthesise authentic primary and secondary sources as part of their language-learning.

The level of the intended learning outcomes will be benchmarked against the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages as indicated in unit on which the student is simultaneously registered

Assessment Information

In-class tests of Reading, Writing and Listening – 75%, assesses ILOs 1, 2, 3, 4.

In-class Presentation / Speaking exercise to assess Oral – 25% - assesses ILOs 1, 2 and 3

How much time the unit requires

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
