Description including Unit Aims

  • Short- and long-term elastic analyses of composite structures including effects of slip.

Aim is to enable students to understand and quantify effects of connection flexibility on load responses of composite structures under short-term and long-term external actions, and to develop ability to understand how connection behaviour influences analysis and design approaches for composite structures in general. Key aim is to see these concepts at work in context of steel-FRP, concrete-FRP and steel-concrete composite structures, where connection behaviour changes significantly.

  • Prestressed Concrete.

Aim is to enable students to understand advantages and dis-advantages of prestressed concrete relative to reinforced concrete. Also to identify and quantify different sources of loss in pre-tensioned and post-tensioned concrete systems.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Understand roles of connections in load responses of composite structures at serviceability and ultimate limit states.
  • Develop ability to analyse and design structure depending on connection failure mode.
  • Appreciate differences between analysis / design of new composite structures and of those already existing (including repair and strengthening issues).
  • Gain insight into differences between reinforced and prestressed concrete.
  • Be able to calculate losses in prestressed concrete members.
