Description including Unit Aims
This course provides an introduction to the main developments in Aegean Prehistory and Greek Archaeology, from c. 3000 to 200 BC. Topics discussed will include settlement types and patterns, burial traditions, architecture, social organisation, artistic achievements, literacy, religion and economics.
Aims:
- To introduce students to the key issues informing the archaeological analysis of Aegean and Greek material culture and art from the Bronze Age to the Hellenistic period.
- To familiarise students with the main archaeological features and chronological developments of Aegean and Greek civilisations.
- To encourage students to develop a critical understanding of the relevant archaeological sources and their interpretations.
Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of the unit, a successful student will be able to:
- Appraise the key issues informing the archaeological analysis of Aegean and Greek material culture and art from the Bronze Age to the Hellenistic period.
- Recognise the main archaeological features and chronological developments of Aegean and Greek civilisations.
- Assess critically the relevant archaeological sources and their interpretations.
