Description including Unit Aims

This Unit of Teaching will be offered as an Optional Unit as part of a modular distance learning programme. The programme will allow students to build Certificate, Diploma or Masters level qualifications by combining optional 20 credit units. The Periodontology Unit has the following general aims:

• To provide the students with the underpinning knowledge and skills to understand the aetiology and pathology of the 5 types of periodontal disease.
• To provide the students with the underpinning knowledge and clinical skills to diagnose and treatment plan periodontal patients
• To provide the students with the underpinning knowledge to carry out effective hygiene phase treatment on patients with periodontal disease
• To provide the students with the underpinning knowledge and clinical skills to carry out periodontal maintenance therapy

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will obtain a knowledge and understanding of the following:

• the different types of periodontal diseases and their clinical presentation
• the role of the plaque biofilm and the interaction with the immune system in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease
• the principles of non-surgical management of periodontal disease
• the management of furcation involved multi-rooted teeth
• the effect of systemic disease and risk factors on the presentation and progression of periodontal disease

The student will acquire the skills and attributes necessary for:

• the delivery of oral hygiene advice tailored for the individual patient
• the delivery of smoking cessation advice
• the delivery of root surface instrumentation
• the use of locally delivered antimicrobial agents
• the management of failed toot surface instrumentation
• the use of periodontal maintenance protocols

Assessment Information

This Unit will have the following three summative assessments:

1. Online assignments (20% of total Unit mark)

• Four interactive online course work activities will contribute 20% to the final unit mark

2. Reflective case report (40% of total Unit mark)

• Reflective case study (2500 words) will contribute 40% to the final unit mark

3. Unit final written examination

• Multiple Short Answer questions (20% of unit mark)
• E-assessment (20% of unit mark)
