Description including Unit Aims

Extended individual research project on specialist topic in robotics and autonomous systems. Topics initiated by “call for projects” issued to students, industrial partners and supervisors, then refined through discussions to promote collaboration where appropriate. Project allocation according to student preference survey.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Perform individual, original research in the field of robotics and autonomous systems.
  2. Present research findings in written, oral, and poster formats.
  3. Plan, execute and manage an extended piece of research.

Teaching Information

This unit is primarily experiential. After an initial introduction to the problem, students will manage their own activities, with staff on-call support during timetabled laboratory periods.

Assessment Information

  • 25% : interim assessment presentation (approx. 15 minutes) of project plan and initial findings to assessor (formative)
  • 20% : individual viva with two assessors from the CDT supervisor college (formative and summative)
  • 45% : dissertation (approx 10,000 words) (summative)
  • 10% : poster
