Description including Unit Aims

This module will develop the awareness of implant surgery complications and their management. Advanced surgical techniques will be introduced including microsurgical techniques and advanced soft tissue management techniques.

Intended Learning Outcomes

• To have a knowledge of the complications of implant surgery and their management.
• To have a knowledge of the aetiology and management of peri-implant diseases
• To have a knowledge of the relevance of bisphosphonates in the management of patients requiring minor oral surgery and dental implants.
• To have a knowledge of the concepts and skills involved in microsurgery and advanced soft tissue management.
• To have a knowledge of mucogingival surgery techniques.

Teaching Information

Lectures and small group teaching on study day 9. Distance learning package delivered via Blackboard including additional ‘podcast’ lectures/videos and directed reading. This unit runs concurrently with the Clinical Practice attachment Unit and is closely linked with it, teaching is therefore supplemented by one to one teaching and observation of clinical practice.

Assessment Information

Formative assessment

During the study day via direct verbal feedback, particularly during simulated surgery sessions.

Practical assessments:

Hands on practical exercises using pigs jaws. How to harvest a sub-epithelial connective tissue graft and suture it at its recipient site. How to harvest a free gingival graft and suture it at its recipient site. Assessment of practical skill, flap design and implant placement in simulated bone, membrane placement and microsurgical techniques.

Written assignments:

Written assignment looking at implant failure. 100% of unit mark

Total 100% of unit marks.
