In this unit, students will undertake an advanced open-ended engineering project as a team, enabling them to develop conceptual and detailed solutions for an engineering project, utilising and extending their knowledge, understanding and skills acquired throughout the degree programme.
Students will organise their own work and integrate it with the overall activities of the team, as well as coordinate the overall direction of the team, and communicate their work through a group technical report and group presentation.
On successful completion, students will be able to:
Each team is allocated an academic supervisor at the beginning of the year. He or she is responsible for advising the team and students on how they might progress with the project. The overall specification of the project is decided by the supervisor with input from the students. The students and the supervisor will discuss technical aspects and the supervisor will advise on project direction in regular meetings. The group research supervision meetings are complemented by a series of lectures and seminars.
The single summative assessment is based on the project consisting of a written report followed by a viva, is informed by supervisor feedback and peer assessment within the group and considers the satisfactory completion of a set of must-do formative assignments (Project Specification, Mid Sessional Review, Poster) throughout the year.
The report will be used by the assessors to establish the baseline group mark and the viva and peer assessment will then be used to assess the individual contributions to the group and adjust the marks accordingly. The assessors will take note of the comments made by the supervisor in assessing the work.
Recommended by the supervisor, as appropriate for the project.
