Description including Unit Aims

The Unit of Biomaterials comprises 2 Elements: 1. Basic Biomaterials Science 2. Applied Dental Materials

Biomaterials is taught as a Vertically Integrated Theme. Biomaterials are central to many processes in modern dentistry, and it is essential that students and newly qualified dentists have a thorough knowledge and understanding of both modern dental biomaterials, and the principles which lie behind the development and use of these and future biomaterials. Because of this, the biomaterials teaching and learning activities are dispersed throughout years 2, 3 and 4 of the BDS Programme, to enable students to get the greatest benefit from well-timed, carefully designed and feedback-informed teaching.

Year 2 Both Elements are taught in this year. Basic Biomaterials Science introduces the most commonly used restorative dental materials. Teaching and learning methods include lectures, practicals, various eLearning techniques, a problem-based learning project, and visits to general dental practitioners to observe and discuss the use of dental biomaterials by experienced dentists. The Element of Applied Dental Materials is interwoven into the Restorative 1 (Skills) Unit, and covers a range of basic and applied aspects in dental biomaterials.

Year 3 The Element of Applied Dental Materials is interwoven with the Unit of Restorative 1 (Skills) in this year and comprises a number of lectures and a consolidation session with significant input from Biomaterials. These include sessions on: Porcelain Casting Alloys Principles of Adhesive Dentistry Gold Inlays and Onlays Properties of Stainless Steel Wire A consolidation session on restoration of teeth with a porcelain jacket crown or porcelain fused to metal crown

Year 4 The Element of Applied Dental Materials is interwoven with the Unit of Restorative 1 (Skills) in this year and comprises a number of lectures and a consolidation session with significant input from biomaterials. These include sessions on: Conventional Bridge Design Tooth Coloured Inlays and Onlays Endodontic Surgery Dental implants Management of discoloured anterior teeth Restin-retained bridgework History of ceramics Tissue management Post crowns Consolidation session on adhesive restorations
