This unit explores the concept of Europe as it has developed from earliest times to the modern day. Students will consider the relative degrees of unity and diversity across European societies, taking in Classical traditions, medieval and Christian conceptions of Europe, the nature of the European city, the extent to which European culture and traditions have been exported beyond the home continent, and the degree to which a tangible European identity has emerged in the contemporary world. Students will be introduced to key trends in European thought and tradition, and the unit will discuss the value of the term 'Europe' as a framework for understanding and analysing cultural, historical and contemporary phenomena.
