Description including Unit Aims
The unit will provide a structured and supervised opportunity for final year students to pursue independent projects to agreed topics of interest within the areas of performance or screen studies. This unit is for Joint Hons students who will undertake either an 7,500-word extended essay OR Industrial Placement + 3,500-word critical analysis OR a 15-minute performance/10-minute screenwork (video or installation) + 3,500-word critical analysis.
Aims
- To present a clear, well-structured and extended argument, supported by relevant critical and theoretical literature, that additionally develops independent lines of inquiry
- To provide the opportunity for students to extend their knowledge and experience of the discipline through independent study;
- To enable students to develop and apply appropriate scholarly means of enquiry into a chosen aspect of the discipline;
- To provide the opportunity for students to extend their knowledge and experience of the discipline through independent work in an appropriate host organization;
- To enable students to develop and apply appropriate knowledges and skills within a professional setting;
- To enable students to develop and apply appropriate creative and technical production skills within a chosen aesthetic and/or generic context.
Intended Learning Outcomes
- To demonstrate knowledge of, and use creatively, a wider range of secondary literature than at Level I
- To be able to apply with confidence and competence a range of established critical and theoretical ideas and to develop a critical approach towards them
- To present work that is highly assured in its use of English and referencing
- To be able to communicate fluently key ideas based on secondary reading, relevant primary texts and independent research/lines of inquiry
- To demonstrate advanced skills of time management
- To plan and execute a research project
- To demonstrate ability to work constructively and creatively in a professional setting
- To demonstrate ability to work within the disciplines of production and project processes, working to deadlines and within production budgets of the host organization
- To work independently and reach individual/personal judgements within a professional context

Teaching Information
Supervision x 10 (15 hours)

Placement of 75-150 hours accompanied by Mentor’s report and 3,500-word written component, where appropriate
Assessment Information
EITHER
7,500-word extended essay
OR
Industrial Placement + 3,500-word critical analysis
OR
15-minute performance/10-minute screenwork (video or installation) + 3,500-word critical analysis.

Reading and references will be provided individually according to the agreed project.
