Description including Unit Aims

Open to MB ChB students only. Covers the specialties of Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Vascular Surgery, Otolaryngology (ENT) and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Take record and present a relevant history, including drug history.
  • Examine a patient and elicit, demonstrate and interpret common physical signs.
  • Demonstrate an adequate knowledge base and an ability to use this knowledge to guide your history taking and examination.
  • Integrate the history and physical findings to construct a working diagnosis.
  • Formulate plans for investigation and treatment of the core clinical problems in the light of the available evidence base, including drug therapy for common indications.
  • Diagnose and understand principles of management of acute medical emergencies.
  • Demonstrate an ability to communicate diagnosis and management plan to patients and elicit and respond appropriately to patient’s questions about their care, including assessment of their understanding and capacity to give consent.
  • Develop skills with common clinical procedures.
  • Demonstrate a professional attitude.
  • Demonstrate an ability to research clinical problems and understand application of the findings of this research to clinical management.
  • Demonstrate an ability to communicate clinical findings to patients and other health care professionals both in clinical and academic settings.
