Description including Unit Aims

This unit explores the ways in which various urban environments have been represented in art and the role that art and artistic agencies have played in the shaping of various urban environments. We will therefore examine the representation of the city by a range of eighteenth and nineteenth-century British-based artists, and address how the commissioning of public art and the establishment of museums and galleries have altered actual cityscapes and assisted in the construction of civic identity. Artists to be studied will include William Hogarth, Gustave Doré and Ford Maddox Brown, amongst many others. This module contains a museological element and will include fieldwork
