Description including Unit Aims

To introduce systems engineering principles and practices as applied in the aerospace industry. The course will include aspects such as system requirements process, functional analysis, safety assessment, system design and certification. Theoretical topics will be illustrated through several case studies on different vehicle systems or sub-systems.

The aims of the unit are:

  • To provide an introduction to the discipline of Systems Engineering in the aerospace industry including deriving requirements, requirements validation and verification, safety assessment and design.
  • To prepare students for the final year design project.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course and coursework, the student will be able to:

  1. Apply appropriate Systems Engineering tools/methods to tackle complex design problems.
  2. Identify several systems, and their component technologies, found in civil and military aerospace vehicles.
  3. Formulate and integrate systems from requirements definition, through concept development to final implementation in the context of their operational role.
  4. Evaluate the suitability of a system for a purpose based on a supplied specification.
  5. Determine the specification of a system to meet functional and performance requirements.
  6. Know the requirements of a system element within the context of a wider, integrated systems of systems.
  7. Apply the design processes that need to be employed in order to certify safe and reliable systems.

Teaching Information

Teaching will be delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions, which may include lectures, practical activities supported by drop-in sessions, problem sheets and self-directed exercises.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
