Description including Unit Aims

This unit aims to highlight:

  • Potentially unfamiliar teaching and learning methods used in UK Higher Education;
  • Individual issues with oral language such as pronunciation, pausing, stress and intonation;
  • Concept of and competence in intercultural communication for internationalised Higher Education;
  • Higher order thinking skills of application, analysis, evaluation and reflection.

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand and use appropriate academic language and style in seminars and presentations;
  2. Apply appropriate listening and note-taking strategies in seminars and presentations;
  3. Apply appropriate reading strategies in preparation for seminar discussions and presentations;
  4. Present and discuss texts among peers;
  5. Demonstrate understanding of the concept of intercultural communication;
  6. Demonstrate competence in intercultural communication;
  7. Apply critical questioning to all aspects of academic work;
  8. Reflect on learning and set appropriate goals.

Teaching Information

The unit runs over 12 weeks. The unit is taught in small groups (maximum 16 students). You will be expected to take an active part in interactive classroom activities, including pair and group work, peer review, seminars, presentations. You will also be asked to prepare reading or listening texts in advance of the class and follow up class work to consolidate your learning. You are also encouraged to make full use of the online learning environment. There will also be regular tutorials.

Assessment Information

Coursework 60%

  • Group presentation to an international audience (30%) (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)
  • Contribution to a seminar in an international context (20%) (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)
  • Reflective journal (10%) (7, 8)

Exams 40%

  • Listening 1 hour (20%) (2, 5, 7)
  • Reading 1 hour (20%) (3, 5, 7)
