Aim: to deepen understanding of assessment practice and principles in order to improve assessment strategies
in their own programme.
This module is aimed at those who are in a position to plan and put into effect assessment strategies for a unit,
year or whole programme. This will deepen knowledge of current thinking and research into assessment theory
and practice. You will reflect on your own current assessment practices, explore innovative approaches to
assessment and review approaches to programmatic assessment. This module will give you the tools to make
innovative and evidence based changes to current assessment practices.
Participants will be able to:
Analyse and self-evaluate current knowledge of assessment methodologies.
Critique own assessment provision drawing on a critical review of current theory and research evidence.
Explore programmatic assessment in their own context.
Design new and innovative strategies of assessment for varied learning outcomes.
There will be a mixed method approach consistent with current best
practice. This will include presentations by course tutors, large and
small group discussions, workshops and teamwork, paired activities, online resources,
presentations by participants with structured learning outcomes.
Formative assessment: writing and critiquing own assessments with
reference to theory.
Summative assessment: written assignment(s) totalling 3000
words (or equivalent). This totals 100% of final grade for the module.
Programmatic assessment: from assessment of learning to assessment for learning
