This unit aims to enhance students’ knowledge of relevant to indication of periodontal and implant surgeries based on biological principals, relevant anatomy, physiology, pathology, microbiological and technical requirements. They will develop their understanding of outcomes following surgical and regenerative periodontal therapy and implant surgery based on current and seminal literature. Students will develop technical skills and understanding of use of dental materials. Students will need to show skills of appropriate treatment planning while recognising individual factors and effective consent obtaining and execution of procedure.

This unit accounts for 20 credits and there will be a total of 200 learning hours.
The unit will be taught through face-to-face contact symposium, weekly asynchronous and synchronous online resources including tutorials, discussions based on key readings and students experiences, evidence base summaries, case study presentation involving evidence based search, analysis, problem-solving and decision-making; peer-to-peer interactions involving group and individual exercises; presentations, discussion, and debate. The summative assessment for this unit will include a reflective case report submission (2,000 word).
The remaining learning hours will be spent in independent study and in the preparation of assessment. The face-to-face symposium will be team-taught by a range of academics in the school and invited external experts. The weekly asynchronous and synchronous teaching will follow an initial timetable with key concepts and building students learning to cover all the unit learning outcomes.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. For appropriate assessments, if you have self-certificated your absence, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (for assessments at the end of TB1 and TB2 this is usually in the next re-assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any exceptional circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
