Description including Unit Aims

To provide students with the underpinning practical knowledge, skills and professionalism to carry out simple oral surgical procedures

Intended Learning Outcomes

• Treatment plan patients appropriately for straightforward oral surgical procedures taking into account medical history, pain and anxiety management and complexity of treatment
• Deliver effective local anaesthesia using appropriate techniques for oral surgical procedures
• Prepare for an oral surgical procedure using appropriate cross infection control measures and personal protective equipment
• Complete straightforward extractions of erupted teeth, including erupted wisdom teeth, and retained roots
• Complete simple surgical extractions of retained roots by applying surgical principles
• Describe and manage a range of post-operative complications of dental extractions
• Relay post-operative instructions to a patient effectively following an oral surgical procedure
• Reflect on how the learning acquired in the programme can be applied to your own workplace

Teaching Information

Teaching will use a blended learning approach delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous activities. Students will be expected to engage with all learning.

A range of teaching are used in the unit including:

• Direct clinical supervision
• Small group teaching
• Clinical skills sessions e.g. suture simulation
• Self-directed learning using virtual learning environment material

Assessment Information

• Reflective Case Report (50%)* A summative e-assessment at the end of the course (50%)* Clinical portfolio (must pass) consisting of 2 work-place based assessments (WBA's) and a clinical logbook of cases seen during the clinical days All assessments must be passed ≥ 50% and there is no compensation between the individual assessments. Attendance is compulsory at a minimum of five operative clinical days in the Oral Surgery Department at Bristol Dental Hospital. If a student does not attend the minimum number of clinical days they will not pass the unit.
