The unit will provide a structured and supervised opportunity for final year students to pursue a written independent research project on a topic of their interest, subject to approval by the unit convenor, within the area of film and television studies.
Unit Aims:
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. engage closely with major thinkers, debates and intellectual paradigms within film and/or television studies and put them to productive and effective use;
2. formulate appropriate research questions and employ appropriate methods and resources for examining those questions in detail;
3. evaluate, draw upon and effectively deploy a range of sources and conceptual frameworks that illuminate and develop an understanding of issues within film and/or television;
4. produce work which is informed by, and contextualised within, relevant theoretical issues and debates;
5. gather, organise and deploy ideas and information in order to formulate arguments cogently, and express them effectively in written forms;
6. structure and sustain an extended critical argument;
7. organise and manage a supervised, self-directed project.
Weekly seminar and 5 x group or individual supervisions, supported by self-directed tasks where appropriate.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours
of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks,
independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an
assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
