Description including Unit Aims
This unit provides Single and Joint Hons students with the opportunity to focus analytical skills through weekly discussions of performance, film or television programmes – from works currently on stage, cinematic exhibition and broadcast to library-based materials. Tutorial leaders and students will agree schedules at the beginning of the unit.
Aims
- to extend students’ understandings of key areas in the study and analysis of performance and screen media;
- to develop critical understandings of the crucial components of performance and screen media through viewing contemporary works in circulation;
- to utilise conceptual vocabularies and theoretical frameworks for the creative analysis of contemporary works in circulation;
- to develop an understanding of performance and screen media in an historical context.
Intended Learning Outcomes
- students will be able to articulate their understandings of key areas in the study and analysis of performance and screen media in an oral presentation context;
- students will demonstrate developing critical understandings of the crucial components of performance and screen media in the context of contemporary works in circulation;
- students will deploy conceptual vocabularies and theoretical frameworks in their creative analyses of contemporary works in circulation;
- students will be able to place contemporary works in an historical context.

Assessment Information
Assessment: Student presentations in weeks 8 & 10; students to audio record presentations and submit to tutorial leader. Each student will present twice. The first presentation will be worth 1/3 of the mark and the second will be work 2/3 of the mark in order to weight exit velocity. Both presentations will be 10 minutes long, followed by 5 minutes of questions from the group and will be assessed according to published criteria, and addressing the specific elements of the learning outcomes:
- argument: the coherence and logic of the presentation;
- evidence: the relevance of the information used to support the argument;
- interpretation: the extent to which the argument is explored;
- presentation skills: the extent to which the chosen means of communicating the argument are appropriate and engaging;
- time management: the extent to which the presentation explores its argument within the given time-frame - responses to questions
The unit director will moderate this unit, based on established moderating guidelines.
