Mandatory for Engineering Design students only

Co-requisites

Design and Manufacturing Principles 1

School/department Department of Civil Engineering
Faculty Faculty of Engineering

Description including Unit Aims

This unit introduces students to:

  • Computer Aided Design (CAD)
  • The design process, from creative/conceptual design, to sub-system and embodiment design of a product
  • The design of mechanical parts, structures and mechanisms
  • The representation of design using computers, sketching and visual presentation

By undertaking an integrated ergonomic design project, the aims of the unit are to enable students to:

  • Build competence and confidence in using a Computer Aided Design (CAD) package to create parts and assemblies
  • Experience and understand stages of an engineering design process
  • Prepare manufacturing drawings using CAD, design mechanical parts and present design work with a presentation and poster
  • Acquire fundamental engineering design skills for Design Project 2 and further study in the Engineering Design programme

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:

  • Create, edit and present solid models of a wide range of mechanical parts including structures and mechanisms
  • Describe CAD tools and their use for tasks such as assembly modelling and the production of manufacturing drawings.
  • Describe the stages of the design process and the activities undertaken at each stage.

Teaching Information

Classes will involve lectures, computer-based class tutorials and presentations. Students will be expected to complete some tutorial activities and review lecture material outside of class. The unit comprises of 8 x lectures, 30 hours of supervised computer-based classes (15 x 2hr sessions), 4 x hours of presentation assessment and around 50 hours of study/activities out of class.

Assessment Information

Formative assessment:

a) CAD tutorial activities and tasks reviewed in class (ILO 1&2)

b) Supervised coursework sessions in class and logbook (ILO 3)

Summative assessment:

ILO 1 -'3: 2 x coursework assignments (35% each), each consisting of a 5-page (maximum) design report including text, diagrams and calculations; and a short Powerpoint presentation and poster (30%) reflecting the learning outcomes and content of the unit as a whole. The unit is 100% coursework with no exam-based assessment.
