Description including Unit Aims

The unit will examine the difference between 'land' (the natural phenomena of the world) and 'landscape' (their representation in art). With the latter, the concentration will be on significant examples of landscape art from a wide chronological and geographical range rather than coverage of all periods. The concentration will be on painted representations but more modern conceptualisations, particularly Land Art, will also be considered.

Aims:

  • To introduce students to a broad theme within art history and to explore this theme in a broad chronological context.
  • To introduce students to working with visual and textual sources
  • To introduce students to issues relating to setting visual and textual sources in their wider context
  • To introduce students to the practice of learning independently within a small-group context
  • To give students a sound general understanding of the significance of landscape art and to examine the range of debates that this has generated.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the unit students should have:

  • deepened their understanding of current art historical study and research
  • learned how to work with both visual and textual sources
  • developed their skills in contributing to and learning from a small-group environment
  • an understanding of the range of landscape in western art and the ability to differentiate between the more significant traditions of the genre.
