Description including Unit Aims

An introduction to and overview of major areas/themes in the discipline of Hispanic and Latin American Sstudies, for example an author, a literary genre or period, a significant historical event or movement.

Aims:

1. To provide an introduction to and overview of major areas/themes in the discipline of Hispanic and Latin American studies.

2. To introduce students to key concepts and methods in the study of aspects of the histories, literatures and cultures of Spain and Latin America.

3. To familiarise students with the use of primary sources selected from across the periods covered by this unit.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will have acquired a basic knowledge of a number of major areas/themes within the discipline of Hispanic and Latin American studies. They will also be familiar with the use of key concepts and methods, with the use of primary sources, and with a wide range of secondary sources in both English and Spanish where appropriate.

Assessment Information

2 x 1500 word essays (25%/25%) & 2 hour exam 50%.

Reading and References

A variety of literary, historical and cultural texts, dependent on the expertise of the staff available in any one year. Students will be informed of each years set reading following confirmation of acceptance of their place at the University online.
