This is a compulsory 60cp unit and an integral part of the 180 cp MRes in Advanced Composites. It is composed of a series of individual projects and a group project and aims to develop and combine new composites knowledge and skills with personal and transferable skills training opportunities.
On successful completion of the unit, the students will be able to: - understand the practical, analytical and philosophical aspects of discovery and innovation - critique and communicate complex arguments using a diverse range of skills - source, assimilate and critique relevant information - formulate a well structured technical review - apply composite design and manufacturing understanding and analysis to design, build and test a high performance composite structure - formulate Matlab routines to solve engineering problems - utilise Abaqus FE analysis in structural composite design
Introductory lectures, informal teaching (tutorials), supervised workshops.
Students complete a composites literature review, two numerical modelling of composites exercises, and a composite design, manufacture and test group project.
Students are advised on appropriate references at the start of each activity (references will vary year on year due to different topics being covered every year).
