Description including Unit Aims

This unit introduces students to fundamental concepts in mechanics (statics, kinematics, dynamics, work and energy, linear and angular momentum), with the aim to apply these methods to solving engineering problems.

Intended Learning Outcomes

After completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1. explain the fundamental concepts of statics and dynamics;
2. employ appropriate methods to solve problems in mechanics;
3. apply the MATLAB software package to solve engineering problems.

Teaching Information

Teaching will be delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions, which may include lectures, practical activities supported by drop-in sessions, problem sheets and self-directed exercises.

Assessment Information

[85%] 2-hour timed assessment (ILO 1 - 2);

[15%] MATLAB assignment (ILO 2 - 3);
