The course covers advanced topics in microeconomic theory which include, mechanism design, market design, social choice theory and information economics.
We further develop concepts in fame theory and apply them to selling mechanism, contracts, and different markets with imperfections.
Upon completion of the unit students will have the ability to understand, apply and evaluate these tools and undertake novel research in economic theory.
Topics covered will include:
Auction Theory, Mechanism and Market Design, Optimal mechanisms and efficient mechanisms. Cooperative Game Theory. Social Choice Theory – Impossibility theorems. Information economics, Moral hazard, Adverse Selection, Risk Sharing. Contract Theory.
1. Develop a thorough and in-depth treatment of further basic concepts in microeconomics following MRes Microeconomics I
2. Recognize fundamental analytic paradigms rigorously
3. Access the journal articles first-hand, to evaluate them critically and to start independent research projects
Teaching will be delivered through a combination of large and small group classes, supported by online resources

Exam, 3 hours. Worth 85% of unit mark. Assesses ILOs 1-3.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours
of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks,
independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an
assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
