Those choosing this unit will be expected to organize a conference; and to present a paper at that conference. Early in the first semester, a theme or topic will need to be chosen, a plenary speaker invited, and a call for papers issued. Those taking part will need to decide how to delegate the various responsibilities: publicity; the booking of conference rooms and lecture theatres; the provision of tea, coffee and lunch; the drawing up of panels and communicating with speakers; the chairing of panels. The conference will be held at the end of the second semester. Assessment will be primarily by the intellectual content of the paper presented (to be submitted in advance of the conference); a small component will be awarded according to the quality of the paper's presentation and the professionalism with which the conference as a whole is conducted.
Experience of organisation and of decision making; experience of working as a team; experience of presenting scholarly work coherently and concisely; experience of engaging in academic debate; professional development.
The emphasis here on is students themselves taking the initiative. An initial seminar led by the Unit director will set out what is involved in conference organisation. Students will then organise meetings themselves. A further seminar, involving the unit director and other members of staff, will require students to present two possible conference themes, with subsequent discussion at that seminar determining that year’s theme. A plenary speaker will then be secured by Christmas. Subsequent meetings and preparations will take place in anticipation of the conference itself in late spring/early summer.
