Description including Unit Aims
Students will have a sound knowledge of the concepts and principles underlying restorative dentistry.
This unit aims are:
- To revisit aspects of clinical dental therapy including applied pharmacology
- To develop the relevant skills of restorative dentistry in the primary and permanent dentition, this will include a range of procedures in restorative dentistry including amalgam and tooth coloured restorations in both permanent and primary dentitions.
- To carry out the placement of fissure sealants and preventive resin restorations.
- To have knowledge of the classification, aetiology, pathology, progression and presentation of dental caries
- To equip the student with the tools to be competent at the interpretation and management of a treatment plan.
- To know how and when to make appropriate referrals to other members of the dental team.
Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of this unit the student will:
- Be competent in the identification, treatment and management of dental caries in the primary and permanent dentitions.
- Have knowledge of the interface between restorative dentistry and periodontal diseases.
- Be competent at completing a range of procedures in restorative dentistry this will include amalgam and tooth coloured restorations in permanent and primary dentition, pulpotomies on primary teeth, and placement of pre-formed metal crowns on primary teeth.
- Be competent in the placement of fissure sealants and preventive resin restorations with good knowledge of their properties and composition.
- Be competent at advising appropriate preventive measures against dental hard tissue loss for a range of adults and children.
- Have knowledge of the special dental needs of children and adults with disabilities and recognise developmental dental abnormalities.
- Be competent at the impression-taking and placement of rubber dam.
- Have knowledge of how to identify medical emergencies and provide immediate management including management of anaphylactic reaction, hypoglycaemia, upper respiratory obstruction, cardiac arrest, fits, vaso-vagal attack, inhalation of foreign bodies and haemorrhage.

Assessment Information
Summative
1.5 hour clinical practical assessment. Pass mark 50%
1.5 hour written (short essay) assessment- 4 compulsory questions related to Dental Therapy clinical practice. Pass mark 50%.
These assessments are equally weighted.
Formative
Completion of clinical competencies to required standards
Formative assessments via adult and child clinical case presentations.
Practice patient case presentation – formative only but with immediate feedback and Q&A session.
Students and Tutors meet regularly to review clinical log books and discuss clinical formative assessments and student development and progression. Students who are consistently graded poorly on the formative assessments may not be able to progress to the summative assessment.
