The unit focuses on the career and work of a single artist, Edouard Manet. It considers biographies of him, concentrating on how their formation may have been predicated on views of Manet as an artist. The unit also examines Manet's artistic production as a whole. His relatively neglected graphic work is investigated, as well as very famous paintings such as Olympia and A Bar at the Folies-Bergère. The artist is also contextualised, both in relation to artistic movements of his day, and in terms of historical developments, many of which he addressed, obliquely or otherwise, in his art.
On successful completion of this unit students will have (1) developed a detailed knowledge and critical understanding of the life and work of Edouard Manet; (2) in-depth understanding of its historical, artistic and cultural contexts; 3) demonstrated the ability to analyse and evaluate biographical issues pertinent to the study of Manet (4) demonstrated the ability to identify and evaluate pertinent evidence/data in order to illustrate/demonstrate a cogent argument. Additionally, as part of a level H/6 unit, students will be expected to (5) display high level skills in evaluating, analysing, synthesising and (where apt) critiquing images and ideas.
1 x 2-hour seminar per week.
One summative coursework essay of 3-4000 words (50%) and one unseen examination of two hours comprising 2 questions out of 8 (50%). Both elements will assess (1) knowledge and critical understanding of the development of the life and work of Edouard Manet; of (2) and (3) its historical, artistic, cultural and biographical contexts. The coursework essay in particular will offer students the opportunity to demonstrate ILOs (4) and (5).
