Description including Unit Aims

Aims: students will complete a literature review on a technical topic related to Earthquake Engineering and Resilient Infrastructure as preparation for their summer dissertation. In addition to this they will develop a data-management and presentation plan to assist in scoping their dissertation project. They will make a presentation on their preliminary findings to the year cohort.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the students will be able to:

ILO 1. Have an advanced understanding of academic referencing

ILO 2. Be able to source literature efficiently on a particular technical topic

ILO 3. Synthesize literature sources and produce a comprehensive literature review report

ILO 4 Have an appreciation for advanced methods of scientific data presentation

ILO 5. Have developed advanced oral presentation skills

Teaching Information

11 hrs of lectures plus full day seminar where students will present their preliminary findings:

  1. 11 hrs of lectures (11 x 1hr)
  2. Full day seminar – presentations (6hrs)
  3. 83 hrs of private study

Assessment Information

  • Literature Review Report (60%) IL0 1-3
  • Presentation (40%) IL0 4-5

Please note that regular formative feedback will be provided through teaching activity such as simple exercises and optional activities.
