Description including Unit Aims

This in vivo training unit will involve the following components:

1. Modules 1-4 animal licence training course: Students will complete a Home Office approved training course and assessment to obtain the certificates to apply for a Home Office personal licence.

2. Ethics, 3Rs, anaesthesia and pain management, animal welfare and in vivo experimental design and statistical analysis seminars and workshops.

3. Hands-on practical course in in vivo neuroscience techniques and their application (as described in detail in the attached document).

4. Course assessment.

Intended Learning Outcomes

1. Have a good understanding of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act, the 3Rs and ethical aspects of in vivo animal experimentation following completion of Modules 1-4 of the HO animal licence training course.

2. Have a good understanding of how to design in vivo experiments and factors to be considered (e.g. choice of species, gender, type of anaesthetic, pain management, route of administration etc.).

3. Have obtained a good insight into how to statistically analyse data sets (including power analysis and within subject designs).

4. Have obtained hands-on experience in various in vivo techniques such as handling and injecting of small rodents, measuring blood pressure and body temperature and behavioural observation.
