Having knowledge of language technology is becoming increasingly important for the success of language professionals. In this unit students will acquire an understanding of different language tools by exploiting them to further their knowledge of topics in Portuguese language and translation. Students will learn how to query electronic databases of texts and become familiar with key concepts relating to how these databases can give rise to a number of other language resources, such as dictionaries and machine translation. Through the use of these tools and having first-hand contact with real-world usage examples of the language, students will improve their knowledge of Portuguese whilst also acquiring skills in database querying and machine-translation post-editing.
The unit aims to: 1) introduce students to key concepts that underpin language technology and different linguistic methodologies; 2) develop skills in database querying and post-editing of machine translation; 3) enhance their knowledge of Portuguese; 4) inspire them to further their knowledge of language technology independently and apply it to other contexts and languages.
The unit will develop students’:
