Year 1:
This unit transfers the clinical skills taught in the CSL to patient management and is based within Bristol Dental Hospital.
Subject areas:-
Clinical practice includes the use and monitoring of periodontal disease and plaque biofilm, non-surgical periodontal therapy incorporating the use of Local Anaesthetics as required and encouraging patients towards healthy oral hygiene regimes.
Aims:
Intended Learning Outcomes
Teaching methods include:
Summative assessment
Local Anaesthetic - Clinical log book competencies
There are two assessments:
1. Students must administer 10x Local infiltration Analgesia injections (LIAs) (50% of the unit total)
2. 10 x Inferior Dental Block injections (IDBs) (50% of the unit total).
Each injection is graded with written student reflective and staff feedback. Students need to pass both aspects of this assessment with a minimum of 50%. There is no compensation in this assessment.
NB Continuous formative assessment in clinical reporting and practical delivery of local anaesthetic during patient treatment sessions will continue after this assessment has been passed. Regular review meetings with students and staff ensure progress and development are monitored.
Formative assessment
Students are supported in their learning by a variety of directed formative assessments with which they must engage within this unit. Overall performance will be reviewed and discussed at the School Progress committee at regular meetings x 1 per term.
Removal of Dental Deposits (plaque control)
On-going continuous assessment on clinic using a predetermined standard assessment scheme with immediate feedback to the student. Each student to complete a logbook/portfolio during the course with opportunity to reflect on progress during and at the end of the Unit.
Periodontal Disease
On-going continuous assessment on clinic using a predetermined standard assessment scheme with immediate feedback to the student. Each student to complete a logbook/portfolio during the course with opportunity to reflect on progress during and at the end of the Unit.
Medical History
Ongoing clinical assessment for each individual patient seed, graded with feedback given by clinical staff.
Medical Conditions & Dental Management Implications
On-going clinical assessment for each individual patient seen, graded with feedback given by clinical staff.
Marks obtained in formative assessments above do not contribute to the overall unit mark but failure to complete by the stated end of term deadlines will be raised at the Progress Committee, and may be a barrier to progression.
