In this unit will consider how clinical decisions can be based on valid and reliable evidence, with particular reference to a chosen area of interest within the field of audiology.
Aims:
This unit aims to develop the concepts, processes and skills required to practice evidence-based audiology. It will enable the critical appraisal of clinical evidence, a consideration of ways to disseminate research evidence and ways of monitoring changes in practice. It will provide an opportunity for students to become familiar with the developing field of research in audiological rehabilitation and to demonstrate this knowledge through the completion of an extended project.
The students will be able to:
Produce a dissertation of original work identifying a topic or clinical problem, the application of evidence to the problem and commenting on how services result from the evidence.
This Unit will be taught through lectures, seminar and problem-based small group work. The students will also receive support with individual projects from their personal tutor.
Students will be expected to complete a 2,000 word assignment on the principles of evidence-based practice in Audiology services. (25%)
Students will also select a topic and conduct a detailed review of the research evidence available to clinicians about the topic. This will include a critique of the architecture of existing evidence, the main priorities for developing work and discussion on ways of ensuring implementation of evidence into clinical practice.
