Description including Unit Aims

This unit will explore areas such as phonology, lexical expansion and language typology beyond the essential introductory level. It will introduce cognitive linguistic approaches to understanding sign languages, in discussion of the relationship between language and gesture and the role of metaphor in sign languages. As well as exploring the neurolinguistic basis for sign languages, it will consider applied topics such as language learning and acquisition, language testing and language planning.
