This unit will introduce students to a range of forms of writing – including fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction – and techniques relevant to the writing process, including drafting work, planning, re-reading and editing. The unit is designed for students who may be new to study at this level, so it will also include attention to skills relevant to studying in seminars and to private study, such as note-taking and discussing the work of others.
Students will have had an opportunity (i) to learn about, and experiment with, various forms of writing and techniques relevant to the writing process. Students (ii) will also have been introduced to a range of skills relevant to study at this level and will be offered guidance within the unit on how they might continue their studies beyond it.
Seminars
This unit is designed to be comparable to the BA English Literature and Community Engagement in assessment methods, which (ii) therefore mirror those on 10-credit units within that programme. Assessment for this unit is normally undertaken through a short piece of creative writing of between 1,500 and 2,000 words, which will include a brief (up to 500 words) commentary reflecting on why the student has chosen to work within a particular form of writing for this piece of work (i).
