Description including Unit Aims
From early in their course Baptist ministerial students are required to lead worship in the placement churches and other congregations. This module offers an early introduction to the theory and practice of preaching and leading worship in a free church setting in order to equip them for this early participation in professional practice.
The module is in two parts delivered concurrently.
1. An introduction to leading worship which will include:
- the conduct of public worship
- an examination of the structure and dynamic flow of worship services
- an examination of the component parts of worship
- a survey of available worship resources and their use
- an introduction to the theology of worship
2. An introduction to preaching which will include an introduction to:
- elementary hermeneutics
- oral communication
- sermon construction and development
- the theology of preaching
Intended Learning Outcomes
The unit aims to introduce students to the theory and practice of leading worship and preaching.
On completion of the unit students should:
- have a basic understanding of the theory and practice of leading worship;
- be able to prepare and deliver a sermon;
- be able to prepare and lead worship in the free church tradition.
Teaching Information
Teaching will take place mainly through lectures and some seminars.
The unit will consist of 20 contact hours, equating to 2 contact hours per week for 10 weeks.
Assessment Information
Formative assessment will be through preparation for classes and participation in class discussions and seminars.
Summative assessment will be through:
- A critical reflection on a worship service previously planned and led by the student (50%)
- A short written seminar paper relating to preaching (50%) Aggregate word length to be equivalent to a short essay of 2,000 words.
