Description including Unit Aims

This unit examines the history of sexuality, primarily in Britain and in the USA, since the 1870's. It focuses upon arguments about the emergence of modern sexual identities at the end of the nineteenth century, and the complex history of sex and sexuality in the twentieth century. The fruitful and exciting theoretical literature about sexuality will provide much of the material, complimented by a burgeoning body of historical work on sexuality in twentieth century Britain and the United States. The unit explores the history of changing and contested sexual identities, the relationship between gender and sexuality, and paterns of sexual behaviour. Attention is paid to different sexual subcultures, representations of sexuality, and the role of urbanity and consumption in the development and display of modern sexualities.
