This unit is an excellent opportunity for EngD Systems students to pursue and receive academic credit for a short course, independent study project, summer school, industrial placement, or conference experience that directly relates to a specialised area of interest, related to their EngD programme.
Students who are interested in taking this optional unit must seek approval in advance from the Unit Director to ensure that the chosen experience is eligible for funding and that it provides appropriate content in order to meet the Intended Learning Outcomes outlined below.
On successful completion of the unit, students will be able to:
Students will be offered 2 hours of individual supervisor contact during the unit, which may be scheduled according to need (eg, 2 x 1 hour sessions or 4 x half hour sessions). This contact may be face-to-face, or may take place using electronic video conferencing.
Independent learning will take the form of independent reading, preparation for the experience, preparation for individual supervisor contact, and preparation of the final assignment.
Students should note that the Unit Director will attempt to approve experiences that, in terms of time commitments, nominally adhere to the hours indicated above. However, where a student’s chosen placement extends beyond 10 hours, the student must be aware that they may need to engage with more than 100 hours of teaching and learning in order to achieve 10 credits for this unit.
Summative Assessment (100%): A final, summative reflective report, review or essay (3000-5000 words) to be agreed upon with the Unit Director as well as evidence of attendance/completion at the placement/experience. The level of experience is to be agreed with the Unit Director and may include items such as a completion certificate, supervisor reports etc.
