Description including Unit Aims
This Unit of Teaching will be offered as an Optional Unit as part of a modular distance learning programme. The programme will allow students to build Certificate and Diploma or Masters level qualifications by combining optional 20 credit units. The Surgical Skills 1 Unit has one core element with the following general aim: -
To provide students with the underpinning knowledge and skills to carry out minor surgical procedures under clinical guidance
Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will obtain a knowledge and understanding of the following:
- The assessment and triage of oral surgery cases.
- The removal of teeth with forceps and elevators.
- The principles of minor oral surgery including:
- The management of the complications of tooth extraction including:
- Giving a patient post-operative advice following a surgical procedure.
The student will acquire the skills and attributes necessary:
- To assess and identify potentially complex cases from histories and radiographs.
- To demonstrate suturing techniques.
- To assess and manage the complications of the removal of teeth including:
- To be competent at giving a patient post-operative advice following a surgical procedure.

Assessment Information
This Unit will have two summative assessments:
- Written coursework assessment of 2,000 words (40%)
- Practical assessment on suturing (20%)
- Final written (multiple short answer and MCQ) examination of 2 hour’s duration (40%)
Formative assessment will include:
- Service development project.
- Development of practice protocols.
- Feedback on practical exercises.
Feedback will be provided at the study days as small group tutorials and individual performance.
