Description including Unit Aims

The unit comprises two components: experimental and composite

design exercise. The experimental component is set to develop skills required to plan and conduct

experiments for property identification, use advanced measurement techniques, process experimental

data, verify assumptions, assess impact of manufacturing parameters on composite properties. The

composite product development component of the course will provide with the basic skills required to

design and present a composite component.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit, the students will be able to design and set up experiments for

composite property identification, perform measurements using advanced experimental methods, orally

present a technical subject. The students will also be able to carry out conceptual design and assess

manufacturability of composite products using computer-aided design software.

Teaching Information

Methods of teaching include lectures, seminars and practical sessions in the

laboratory and computer classes.

Assessment Information

(a) Presentation on Experimental methods (based on composite sample testing). (50% weighting)

(b) A design case study report for Composites Product Design. (50% weighting)

These assessments examine student abilities to construct arguments, present and defend design choices, summarise the output of the experiments and measurement procedures, present technical subject in an

oral talk, and demonstrate acquired design skills.
