This optional unit encompasses these sections. 3D rotational dynamics are considered (e.g. 'gyroscopic' effects and Euler's equations). Lagrange's equation is used to determine the differential equations of motion of systems. This is extended to the analysis of the dynamics of general multi-degree of freedom systems. Finally, some of the attributes of non-linear systems are briefly explored. The course is supported by examples sheets and the use of Matlab demonstrations as appropriate.


The aim of this unit is to expand upon the student’s knowledge of dynamics.

Intended learning outcomes

With regard to 3-D rotational dynamics and multi-degree of freedom dynamical systems: recognise equations, deconstruct problem description into manageable parts, implement mathematical solutions and discuss solutions.

Teaching details

This is a 22-hour lecture-based course. The course is supported by examples sheets and the use of Matlab/Simulink demonstrations as appropriate.

Assessment Details

2 hour examination in May/June.
