Description

This Unit of Teaching will be offered as an Optional Unit as part of a modular distance learning programme. The programme will allow students to build Certificate, Diploma or Masters level qualifications by combining optional 20 credit units. The Business Management Unit has the following four Elements and their general aims are: -

Element 1. Finance 2. Financial control (including cash flow), financial gearing, (including dealing with banks), cost allocation, personal taxation, depreciation, advanced forecasting and budget setting.

Element 2. Human resource management 2 To provide participants with the knowledge and research into leadership, risk management and performance management.

Element 3. Business Planning Developing a business plan

Element 4: Marketing Understand the principles of marketing, branding and developing a marketing plan.

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of the Unit Students will • Be able to list the principles business planning • Have evaluated their leadership style and described its strength and weaknesses • Be able to prepare a business plan financial spreadsheet and risk management matrix • Be able to apply the principles of marketing to prepare a marketing plan • Be able to develop a business plan: • Demonstrate they can critically appraise of business skills literature.

Assessment Details

Each element will have exercises for students to undertake in their workplace to give them feedback on how well they manage topics covered in the element. These exercises are designed to give formative assessment. This Unit will have two summative assessments: - 1. Written in course assignments, MCQs and portfolio activities (50%) 2. Final written examination (50%)

The Unit will be summatively assessed as follows: 1. Written assignment. Each Element will have an assignment of a maximum of 2,500 words related to the content of each of the four elements, MCQs and portfolio activities based on questionnaires designed to gain feedback.The in course assessment will contribute 50% to the element mark. 2. A final written examination comprising Multiple Short Answer questions of 45 minutes’ duration will assess all Elements. The final examination will contribute the remaining 50% of marks for the element mark.
