Description including Unit Aims

A comprehensive study of the principles of design and manufacture of advance composites to promote the understanding of the increased complexity of materials properties, and the behaviour and analysis methods for the design and manufacture of advanced composite structures.

Design and Manufacturing information and methods are presented in a series of lectures, including illustrations, and worked examples. Practical understanding of basic manufacturing processes is also supported by laboratory and class demonstrations.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit the student will be able to:

  1. identify and understand the key issues and methods for the design and manufacture of advanced composite structures;
  2. apply the basic principles for conceptual design, manufacturability analysis, initial sizing and preliminary structural analysis of advanced composite components at Masters level.

Teaching Information

Teaching will be delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions, which may include lectures, practical activities supported by drop-in sessions, problem sheets and self-directed exercises.

Assessment Information

Summative assessment:

100% 3 hour timed assessment in May/June, 4 compulsory themed questions. This will assess:

  • ILO 1: through wide ranging sets of design and manufacturing questions
  • ILO 2: through specific design and manufacturing problem questions.

Formative assessment:

ILO 1 and 2 will be assessed through example questions, problems and case-studies with solution checks and online feedback.
