This unit will cover (a) the changing nature of texts, textual authority,and authorship from the Renaissance to the present day; (b) issues of book production and theories of editing; (c) the study of a particular and significant year in English literary history, with the aim of recovering the diversity of its literary production and considering how that diversity is represented by conventional literary histories. Assessment will be by two 3,000 word essays, the first being formative. There will also be non-assessed practical exercises.
There will be one formative essay of 2,000, one summative essay of 3,000 words and a bibliographical assignment of 1,000 words. There will also be non-assessed practical exercises.
