This unit provide students with opportunities to acquire skills of designing composite products and their manufacturing processes. The lectures and practical sessions will provide comprehensive knowledge of design principles and intellectual property required for general product development processes as well as the core knowledge of composites processing, process simulations, manufacturing, tooling, computer-aided design, and conceptual design. They will also learn how to pitch their creative project ideas with sound technical details and how to write technical reports.
On successful completion of the unit, students will be able to:
The unit will comprise lectures, computer labs, and manufacturing labs. The computer lab sessions and the group manufacturing activities will be supported by Teaching Assistants.
Presentation (20%) – Each student will present their product development proposal. The presentation will be in 10 minutes with 5 minutes for questions. (ILO1,2)
Product development report (40%, max. 20 pages including figures, individual report) – The technical depth of their product development proposals will be assessed in detail. The assessment will focus mainly on justification of their engineering decision making. (ILO1-4)
Manufacturing report (40%, max. 20 pages including figures, group report) – The students should discuss the manufacturing quality of the parts using visual inspection and some inspection techniques. (ILO5)
