This unit allows students to write a dissertation of 6,000 words on a subject of their choice relating to literature and community engagement that has been agreed by the Unit Director.
Students choosing to write a dissertation of this kind will meet regularly with an adviser for discussion of preparatory reading and research, work in progress, and drafts etc.
Dissertation projects could: take forward theoretical and practical issues explored by BAELCE students in earlier literature and community engagement units; develop action-research projects rooted in enquiry identified through BAEnglish student’s exploration of wide-ranging literatures and critical approaches to reading literature; or other approaches in agreement with the Unit Director.
Aims
This unit aims to allow a student to undertake a project involving independent research, and to write a dissertation of 6,000 words on a subject of their choice (to be agreed with the Unit Director).
The unit aims to allow a student to develop their research, writing, and reflective skills, and may be of particular interest to students wishing to consider postgraduate study or further work involving literature in the community.
At the end of the unit, the successful student will be able to:
1) Demonstrate an ability to create and carry out their own well-structured research project.
2) Demonstrate advanced independent research skills.
3) Demonstrate understanding of and ability to use theory to inform research practise.
4) Communicate their ideas effectively and maturely
5) Present a persuasive and extended written argument

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours
of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks,
independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an
assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
