This unit will explore the creative process of generating potential solutions to specific scientific problems, evaluating these solutions and developing the most successful of them into a full proposal that could be implemented. Students will research a real-world problem in groups to develop a range of potential solutions. They will critically evaluate the solutions and select the best for further development, ultimately selecting a single solution to pitch. The unit will develop students ability to work in groups and their creative and analytical abilities.
The unit will be based around facilitated group work and will involve formal taught components in personality styles, leadership and how to work effectively in groups. There will also be taught sessions about how to achieve and assess the wider impact of ideas on society. Students will maintain an individual portfolio of their group work throughout the year. They will initially come up with 5-10 potential solutions to a problem, which will be researched and evaluated for strengths, weaknesses and risks etc…, as part of the first stage of the portfolio. As a result, students will cut down the initial list of potential solutions to 3-4 that can be taken through to the next phase of further research and development. At the end of the second stage, students will re-evaluate the strengths, weaknesses and risks of their solutions and evaluate the potential solutions of other groups. Using this feedback, groups will decide on one proposal to submit as a final proposal and pitch as a group oral presentation suitable for an appropriate stakeholder.
