Description including Unit Aims

Detailed gross and systemic anatomy of the domestic species (horse, dog, ruminant). Emphasis is placed on the adaptations of structures and systems for their normal environment and diet. Topics covered include the respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous, digestive, reproductive and muscular systems with emphasis on such functions as locomotion and visceral function. The practical classes in the laboratory will include study of prosected specimens and active dissection on cadaveric animals, as well as surface anatomy on live animals.

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit, students will know:

  • The development, structure and function of the visceral systems of domestic species, including their circulatory supply and drainage, lymphatic drainage and nerve supply.
  • The development, structure and function of the locomotor system as it relates to the particular locomotor demands of each species.
  • The concepts underlying the different structural and functional adaptations found across species.

Teaching Information

Lectures: 2-3 x 1-hour per week

Lab practicals: 1 x 3-hours per week

Assessment Information

  • spot exam November 5%
  • spot exam January 25%
  • spot exam May 25%
  • written short answer paper Summer 45%

The resit exam will comprise a written paper similar to the summer, and a spot similar to that held in April/May but this time with 50 2-part questions, and will cover the whole year's work, but the earlier in-course work mark will not be included so the resit exam will constitute the whole exam. Hence the resit written will count 45% and the resit spot will count 55%. If passed, the resit mark will form the end of unit mark and this will be capped at 40%.
