The aim of this unit is to give students an introduction into the management of infrastructure such as buildings, railways, roads, bridges, airports, ships, water and sanitation systems and energy generation and distribution (gas and electricity) assets. This introduction will include management systems and the quantitative approaches used in performance assessment, whole life costing and optimising investment plans for effective asset stewardship.
The topics covered in this unit are:
• The structure & regulation of the infrastructure industries. • Asset management as a system, its integration with other management systems and the organizational strategic plan. • The concepts of asset management as set out in the ISO55000 series of standards • Asset condition and performance assessments including structural health monitoring, condition-based maintenance and linkages to ‘Smart city’ initiatives • Industry regulation and risk-based investment planning approaches incorporating sustainable development and stakeholder engagement. • Quantitative techniques for whole life costing (acquire, use, maintain and renew or dispose) and decision support tools. • Practical implication of asset management planning for health & safety management (CDM) & environmental protection • Professional competence and the role of the Institute of Asset Management
The group project offers an opportunity to develop an integrated asset management plan for an element of an infrastructure system such as rail, road, marine, energy, water or sanitation based on the principles of ISO55000.
By the end of the course students will:
1. Understand and apply the key principles of asset management
2. Identify engineering activities required to promote and contribute to asset development.
3. Understand and analyse basic asset and related investment performance indicators
4. Understand and apply the principles of asset health monitoring and condition-based maintenance
5. Understand the framework of relevant legal requirements governing asset condition
6. Apply integrated management systems for health, safety, environment and quality
7. Treat asset knowledge and innovation as business assets 8. Appreciate the need for a high level of professional conduct in asset management
